Biography

The Yerxas were a Loyalist line and prior to moving to New Brunswick in 1783 they resided in New York state. Mr. and Mrs. Bishop were married on October 14, 1860 in Charleston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. Census records from 1870 show Mrs. Bishop and two children living in Corland, New York. Mr. Bishop was living in Little Rock, Arkansas and was employed as a levee contractor. In 1880, census records show that Mrs. Bishop and her children had joined her husband in Little Rock, Arkansas and in 1990, they were living in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. By 1910, they had moved to Nashville, Tennessee where Mr. Bishop was employed as a bookkeeper for Bransford Realty. Mrs. Bishop resided in Nashville, Tennessee until the date of her death. At the time of her application to The Old Woman’s Home, she had been a member of Trinity Church for twenty-five years.

Miss Bloodworth requested that her Mother’s body be moved and buried beside her in The Old Woman’s Home lot at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee. This request was granted.

Mrs. Hinton’s husband passed away on April 2, 1913.

Mrs. Hinton’s family moved to Davidson County, Tennessee when she was a child. She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Advent.

Mrs. Hinton was the Matron of The Old Woman’s Home from 1915 – 1924. She worked with The Old Woman’s Home Board of Directors Chairman of Religious Services Committee to secure ministers from several denominations to conduct an hour-long service and visit the sick in their rooms to talk and pray. They met every Tuesday afternoon. After her admission to The Old Woman’s Home, Mrs. Hinton sometimes filled in for the Matron when needed. The Board and Auxiliary also relied on her for help with small duties such as the fair distribution of donated movie tickets.

In October 1930, Mrs. Rankin’s mental health deteriorated to the point that it was unsafe for her to remain in The Old Woman’s Home and she was transferred to the State Hospital. The Board of Directors of The Old Woman’s Home continued to support her and supervise her care until her death in 1933.

Mrs. Ringpfeil’s husband passed away on June 20, 1902. She was a longtime member of the First Lutheran Church.

A notation in the January 1907 minutes of the Board of Directors of The Old Woman’s Home states that Mrs. Ringpfeil was willing and able to make rag carpets and requests the Visiting Committee of the Board to provide rags for this endeavor. Mrs. Ringpfeil passed away at ninety-five years of age, having spent twenty-seven years in The Old Woman’s Home. Mrs. Ringpfeil subscribed to a German newspaper, an original 1908 edition of which is included in the West End Home Foundation’s Archival Collection.

Biography

Miss Tavel moved to Davidson County, Tennessee with her family as a child in 1852. She was a lifelong member of West End M.E. Church, South.

The Tavel sisters’ brother was a Mason and a fellow Mason endowed two rooms for the three sisters at a cost of $5000. Endowed rooms were marked with a brass plate on the door and stood as a monument to the generosity of the donor.

Miss Warren was one of three siblings, having one brother and one sister.

Miss Warren moved to Davidson County, Tennessee in 1897. She was a member of the Baptist Church from the age of fourteen and attended services in Bradley’s Creek, Tennessee. Prior to her admission to The Old Woman’s Home, Miss Wallace resided with her sister’s family and did housekeeping for the family in exchange for a home. After the death of her sister, she continued to live with her brother-in-law and his sister until entering The Old Woman’s Home.
