Biography
She moved to Nashville, Tennessee as a child and lived in Nashville most of her life. Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong were married in 1903. Mr. Armstrong was the Superintendent of the Tennessee School for the Blind. Both Mrs. Armstrong and her husband taught music at the school. Mr. Armstrong passed away on December 9, 1917.
Mrs. Armstrong was on the administrative faculty of Ward Belmont College for many years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and had attended services there for over sixty-eight years at the time of her admission to The Old Woman’s Home. She later attended services at the Downtown Presbyterian Church.

Biography
Miss Bell was employed as a stenographer for the Baptist Sunday School Board for forty-eight years. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church.
Miss Bell enjoyed playing the piano and played for the Ladies in The Old Woman’s Home. She won the prize for “Smallest Waist” (twenty-eight inches) at the annual Maxwell House Christmas Party in 1954. Miss Bell also tied for “Youngest Lady” (68) with Mrs. Mada Bush.

Biography
Mrs. Coldren was one of two siblings, having one brother. Mr. Coldren who was the legal representative for the Park Commission. They resided in Washington, D.C. for a time. Mr. Coldren passed away in June 1931.
Mrs. Coldren was employed by The Junior League Home for Crippled Children as the Executive Secretary. She was known as the “Thank You Lady” and had a reputation for writing the best thank-you notes in forty-two counties. The conclusion of her letter of resignation was typical of the pleasing way in which she put words together: “Of course it is a little difficult just yet for me to realize I am leaving behind my daily associates of whom I am very fond. My heart seems to be filled with bubbles just about to burst, but with the courtesies and sympathetic movements made in my behalf, I would be an ungrateful wretch not to express my appreciation to you ladies. So ’tis chest up, eyes ahead, and my goal is a smile. Thank you so much for everything.” After her retirement, she continued to work each Friday at The Junior League Home.
Mrs. Coldren was an active participant in volunteer work including the Red Cross and local Salvation Army drives. She was a longtime member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church.
Prior to her admission to The Old Woman’s Home, Mrs. Coldren resided in Franklin, Tennessee. At the Old Woman’s Home annual Maxwell House Christmas Party in 1954, she won the prize for “Biggest Waistline” (39 inches) and was quoted as saying: “I wasn’t afraid to tell- after all, I’m no youngster anymore“.

Mrs. Coldren was described as “one of the most deserving and one of the most remarkable women” and was known for her energetic personality, often appearing more active at age 85 than most women of age 60.

Biography
Mrs. Duffy was one of two siblings, having one brother. Her husband was a Cythiana, Kentucky landowner, who passed away on March 4, 1943.
Mrs. Duffy grew up at historic Cragfront, which her parents owned from 1888-1929. She attended schools in Sumner County, Tennessee and was one of the few girls who was graduated from Branham & Hughes Preparatory School in Spring Hill, Tennessee. She later attended Vanderbilt University and studied under Nashville Artisits – Sophonisba Hergensheimer and Charles Cagle. Mrs. Duffy was also a graduate of St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Knoxville, Tennessee and was on the staff of General Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee for several years. She was a communicant of the Cathedral of Incarnation.

Mrs. Duggan’s husband was a United States Deputy Marshal and farmer in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Mr. Duggan passed away in 1946.
Mrs. Duggan moved to Canada at age 19 and later lived in New Orleans. before moving to Shelbyville, Tennessee. After her husband’s death, she moved to Lewisburg and then to Nashville in 1948. Mrs. Duggan was a member of the Eastern Star, Buena Vista Chapter. She was a member of the Episcopal Church and attended services at Christ Church.

Mrs. Eatherly was a graduate of Peabody College. She was a schoolteacher in Chapel Hill, Tennessee and at Rosemont School in Nashville, Tennessee. Mrs. Eatherly was a member of Hillsboro Church of Christ and taught Sunday School classes for over sixty years. She was also a member of the Housewives League and the Medical Auxiliary. Mrs. Eatherly lived in Newbern, Tennessee for four years and in Chapel Hill for twenty-three years before returning to Nashville, Tennessee in 1939.

Biography
Miss Foreman was educated in Nashville Public Schools and attended George Peabody College. In 1926, she accepted a position on the staff of the Methodist Sunday School Board, which later developed into the Board of Education of the Methodist Church. Miss Foreman was a member of the staff for over thirty years. She spent the major portion of her life teaching Christian education in churches in all states of the Union. Miss Foreman believed that often a lesson could be taught more effectively through the use of a story. She was proficient in the art of storytelling. and wrote a number of published stories. Miss Foreman was known for her unselfish spirit and spent her life in service for others. She was particularly interested in young people. Miss Foreman was a lifelong member of McKendree Methodist Church and served as a member of the staff for many years.
Titles of her published works include: Men and Women at Work in the Small Church (1943), The Superintendent of the One Room Church School (1943), Adults at Work in the Small Church (1941), and The Church Board of Education in the Small Church (1936). The Foundation has been unable to locate any copies of Miss Foreman’s published works, but would love to add them to our collection of works published by our Residents.

Biography
Miss Green’s parents were married on April 2, 1897 in Roane County, Tennessee. They were third cousins and her mother’s maiden name was also Green. Miss Green had one brother and one sister, both of whom died in childhood. Her sister passed away at six weeks of age and her brother at the age of twelve. She also had a half-brother who passed away in the 1930s. Her father passed away in 1923.
Miss Green was a graduate of Peabody College and was a teacher at MTSC (now known as MTSU) until her retirement on September 1, 1965. She became a member of the Baptist Church in 1926.
Miss Green withdrew from The Old Woman’s Home in July 1966 on the advice of her physicians who were located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and wanted her to establish a residence closer to their offices.

Miss Grimmett’s father was head of Old Union University. He passed away in October 1922.
Miss Grimmett was a graduate of Union University in Jackson, Tennessee and received her A.B. degree from the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. She earned her M.A. degree at Columbia University in New York City. Miss Grimmett spent most of her adult life as an educator and her career included eight years as the Head of the Department of English in Shelbyville County Schools and an additional eight years as Head of the Department of Latin in various colleges. The last twelve years of her teaching career were spent as a National Instructor in Methods of Health Education, taking her into the teachers colleges of thirty-seven states. Miss Grimmett moved to Davidson County, Tennessee in May 1949 and was active in community and civic affairs. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Miss Grimmett was a descendant of both maternal and paternal pioneer families, and was a member of the Daughters of 1812 and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Mrs. Murrey was the fourth of six siblings.
In 1863, at the close of the War Between the States, Mrs. Murrey’s family moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Mrs. Murrey attended Miss Fannie O’Bryan’s school for Girls and graduated from Ward Seminary in 1880. In April 1882, she married Elihu Osborne. Mr. Osborne was in government service and they spent twelve years on Indian Reservations in Indian Territory as well as Arizona and California. Mr. Osborne passed away in Phoenix, Arizona in 1895 on an Indian Reservation. After the death of her husband, she returned to Tennessee and resided in Bell Buckle for many years while her sons attended Webb School. In March 1908, she married Doctor John Murrey, of Nashville, Tennessee, who passed away in 1916. There were a number of Murrey grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately called her “Miss Anne”.
She attended services at the Presbyterian Church in her childhood, and became a member of the West End Methodist Church in 1908. Mrs. Murrey was a member of the Centennial Club, the State and City Press and Author’s Club, and Author’s Clubs.
Mrs. Murrey listed her occupation as “student and writer (in small way)” on her application for admission to The Old Woman’s Home. Mrs. Murrey was originally admitted to The Old Woman’s Home in 1940. Some years later (May 21, 1949), she withdrew from The Old Woman’s Home to live with a son. She found she was not happy there and returned to The Old Woman’s Home on October 9, 1949.

Mrs. Ritter was a member of the Methodist Church until her marriage, when she became a member of the Downtown Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Ritter’s husband passed away in 1925. Mr. Ritter was the owner of Ritter Furniture Company, which was sold in 1939.

Miss Robertson scratched her birthdate out of the family Bible and the family were unable to determine if she was born in 1865 or 1867.
Miss Robertson was reared and educated in Nashville, Tennessee and for many years taught at the School for the Blind in Nashville. She taught in the South Carolina School for the Blind in Cedar Spring, South Carolina for twenty-five years. Miss Robertson personally secured the charter from the Legislature of North Carolina for Davidson Academy, the predecessor of Peabody College. She was a longtime member of Vine Street Christian Church.

Biography
The Schmitt family moved to Davidson County, Tennessee in 1899. Professor Schmitt taught foreign languages at Ward Belmont School.
Mrs. Robertson graduated from the old Shofner Hospital in South Nashville in 1915 with a Registered Nursing degree and worked as a nurse in Nashville until her marriage in 1922. Mr. Robertson was a Moore County, Tennessee farmer and magistrate. Mrs. Robertson was a lifelong member of the Lutherian Church and attended services at Holy Trinity Church. She was a member of the Red Cross Sewing Class and Senior Citizens.

Mr. and Mrs. Shook were married in 1887. Mr. Shook passed away on September 13, 1904. They had one daughter.
Mrs. Shook was educated in Memphis Public Schools. She moved to Nashville in 1903 when she was employed by the Methodist Publishing House, where she remained for thirty-three years until her retirement in 1936. Mrs. Shook was Chairman of the Red Cross Sewing Unit for twenty years and was a member of Scarritt Aid for more than fifty years, serving on the membership committee for a long period of time. She was a longtime member of McKendree Methodist Church and was active in church activities.
Several of the residents of The Old Woman’s Home, including Mrs. Shook, volunteered with the Davidson County Anti-Tuberculosis Association.
